MAUI · HAWAI‘I
Waterfalls, whales, and the long road to Hana.
The Road to Hana, sunrise at 10,023 feet, snorkelling at the Molokini crescent. Humpbacks in winter, sunsets on the west shore, and luaus by torchlight.
The Maui day
If you only book one day, book this one.
Top-rated, most-booked, and the one most people fly in for. A good place to start a week on Maui.
The classics
Maui's Most Popular Day Tours
The Road to Hana, Molokini, Haleakalā sunrise, whale-watch boats and sunset cruises. The trips most travellers come for.
Mile by mile
The Road to Hana, in six stops.
Sixty-four miles, six hundred curves, fifty-nine one-lane bridges. Most travellers do it in a day. These are the markers you'll be told about — pick the ones you want to stop for, and let a guided tour handle the driving.
Only on Maui
Three experiences you can’t do anywhere else.
Sunset cruises and helicopter flights are everywhere. These three aren’t. Each one is particular to this island. Worth planning the week around.
The drive
The Road to Hana
64 miles, 600 curves, 59 one-lane bridges, and a waterfall around almost every one of them. The drive Mark Twain wrote about. There is one road, and this is it.

Above the clouds
Haleakalā at Sunrise
Hawaiian for “House of the Sun.” 10,023 feet up, the summit rim catches first light over the rest of the island. The National Park requires a permit by 3am. Tour vans handle that bit for you.

The crescent
Molokini Crater
Three miles offshore, a half-sunken volcanic crescent forms a marine reserve with 30+ feet of visibility and 250 fish species. There is no Molokini anywhere else — this is the only volcanic crescent reef in the United States.

The sunrise pilgrimage
Haleakalā, before the rest of the island wakes up.
You wake at three. You drive thirty-eight miles up. You stand on the summit rim in the cold with the other early arrivals. Then the sky breaks pink over the rest of the world. The National Park requires a reservation by 3am sharp. The guided tours hold the slot for you.
Three sides of the island
Pick the side of Maui you’ll wake up on.
Maui has three orientations and they each behave differently. The west runs late and dines on the water. The south runs early and snorkels before noon. The east runs slow and goes up.
West Maui
Lahaina, Ka‘anapali and Kapalua. The west coast runs late: sunset cruises out of Lāhainā, snorkel boats from Mā‘alaea harbour, and dinner on the water.
South Maui
Wailea, Kihei and Makena. The south coast is where most snorkel mornings start — the Molokini crescent and Turtle Town are just offshore, and the water is calm before noon.
East & Up
Hana, the upcountry, the summit. The east side is where Maui keeps its quiet — the Road to Hana waterfalls, the 10,023-foot Haleakalā rim at sunrise, and the rainforest trails inland.
By activity
Or pick how you want to spend the day.
Snorkel boats if you want to be on the water by 8am. Sunset cruises if you want to be on the water at 5pm. Helicopter, waterfall hike, luau, or surf lesson — pick your pace.
